It would seem that panic attacks and anxiety are a really common problem these days. Many people are looking for ways to stop panic attacks or at least control them and many people also are looking for ways to deal with anxiety.

Why is it such a big problem now? I believe that panic attacks and anxiety are being caused by our lifestyles and I?m sure that most experts and others with an interest in this area would agree. However I believe that there are many things that can either trigger or exacerbate these problems and I believe this because of my own experiences.

I?ve had anxiety problems I think all my life really ? even as a child and I think it?s just part of my nature ? ?just me? if you like ? the way I am.

However, I know from my own experiences over the years, that some things make, or have made, my anxiety levels worse. Things such as

* Work, life, employment, family ? the everyday stresses and the way I?m thinking about them ? basically
* Stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine, and probably even alcohol
* My diet ? when my diet is good and I?m avoiding the things that I know I shouldn?t be eating, my anxiety levels are noticeably lower
* Chemicals ? I?m really very sensitive to some chemicals and notice huge differences in the way I feel and my anxiety levels when I?m exposed to certain cleaners and other chemicals in certain products
* Medication ? back when I used to take some medications (example pain killers), I remember getting quite anxious and panicky on some. I?m very sensitive to medications also.

Now, on the subject of panic attacks, I have lots of experience. I?ve suffered badly with them at different points in my life and what I now realise was my biggest trigger for these was smoking cigarettes. It didn?t happen when I first started smoking. For the first 10 years as a smoker, I had no panic attacks. They started after some fairly major stresses ? moving country, and having a tubal ligation which began the onset of a whole barrage of health issues including depression and then the panic attacks. They were so bad that they were crippling me and stopping me from living. I would have them standing in queues at the Post Office or Bank and I would really have to focus on staying calm and breathing to remain there and not run back to the car (as it felt like every fibre of my being was screaming at me to do). I stopped driving for 5 years and relied on my husband totally to take me places and to do the things I felt that I couldn?t handle (simple things such as getting out of the car and going into a shop sometimes!).

I assumed, as would most people reading this that the events (surgery and moving ? stresses) caused the panic attacks to begin and they obviously did trigger them, but it was after I quit smoking that I stopped having them, and then when I (foolishly) started smoking again 7 years later they fairly quickly started again and really began to affect my life badly again.

After quitting smoking again, almost 5 years ago now, the panic attacks are once again gone.

I won?t go into everything (as it would take too long), but I believe that it was the chemical cocktail from the cigarette smoking that was the biggest physical factor in my panic attacks. However, I also know in my experience, that there were other factors that made them worse such as using aerosols (my main offender was hairspray) and then of course, also my mind and my thoughts. I believe that panic attacks are often triggered as mine were initially by a combination of stressors ? physical, emotional as well as chemical. There may also be nutritional deficiencies that play a part (they can be created or made worse by exposure to chemicals also).

However, I know from my own experience that once I started to experience panic attacks, the fear of having one can bring them on and affect your life and then the whole thing can become a self fulfilling fear, that begins a spiral downward and easily gets out of control. For me, part of my recovery from panic attacks was eventually realising that there was nothing to fear.

You may or many not be a smoker, but I can guarantee that there are other chemical stressors in your environment that are affecting the way your body, your hormones and your brain are functioning, as well other physical and emotional stresses that you are experiencing. For those who are smokers, the belief that smoking relaxes you is a lie ? because of your addiction, all it does is make you feel normal. Just like a heroin addict when they?re hanging for a fix and then shoot up.

From my experience, my top 7 suggestions to help to get rid of your panic attacks and anxiety would be:

1. Quit smoking if you?re a smoker
2. Stop taking all drugs (if possible) ? recreational and pharmaceutical-always consult your physician of course!
3. Stop consuming caffeine ? that means coffee, tea, chocolate, cola
4. Clean up your diet ? remove processed foods, colours, preservatives, soft drinks etc (as much as possible)
5. Stop watching the news, reading newspapers etc. Stop watching second hand violence on TV, movies etc.
6. Read good books that will help to change your thinking and your attitude for the better
7. Use safe cleaning products and personal care products that don?t contain any harmful chemicals

For me now, the anxiety is still sometimes an issue ? sometimes a little, sometimes more so but it?s not such a big deal these days. I?ve spent a lot of time and money trying different products, supplements as well as hypnosis, and other ways of changing my thinking to eventually get to a point where I feel that I?ve got control of my life again.
